How would you describe your relationship with God?
Are you satisfied with how well you know Him or do you desire to know Him more? Here are a few suggestions to help you in your pursuit of knowing God more intimately.
- Spend time in His Word consistently. His Word shows us His heart, His thoughts, His character, His actions with others that we can learn from. When my feelings cast doubt on God’s character, His Word speaks truth to me.
- Spend time alone with Him, away from distractions of life. You’re not going to get to know someone by quickly passing by them, “Hey, good to see you. By the way, could you do this for me? Sorry, gotta run! See you tomorrow!”
- Be attentive. Be open to what He wants to show you through His Word and the prompting of the Holy Spirit living in you.
- Trust Him. We can’t really get to know someone if we don’t trust him.
A.W. Pink wrote in the preface to his book The Attributes of God: “God is only truly known in the soul as we yield ourselves to Him, submit to His authority, and regulate all the details of our lives by His holy precepts and commandments.”
As we get to know God, our response should be one of worship.
Tim Hughes, (singer, songwriter, and worship leader) had this to say about the proper response to knowing God:
“When we encounter God…we find perspective. We learn to embrace the smallness of who we are and marvel in the vastness of who He is. Earthly pleasures can no longer take the place of knowing God and being known by Him. We are left ruined. Satisfied and dissatisfied at the same time. We begin on a journey, thirsting for more of God, desperate to understand more clearly the character and nature of God. When we encounter the reality of God, true worship is the outcome. The church needs to recapture a big picture of all that God is. Our view and understanding of him will have a significant impact on our worship. As Graham Kendrick said, ‘Worship is a response and will grow or shrink in direct proportion to our view of Him.’ So, let us continually dig a bit deeper and press on into the mystery and character of God…Often our worship dries up because we fail to passionately explore the fullness of who God is.”
