If you were asked to take a picture of something that reflected your life today and what you’re feeling, what would that picture be?

Recently, our church staff went away for an overnight retreat—a time to slow down and reflect on life. Right before free time, we were asked to go outside and find something to take a picture of that would reflect how we’re feeling about where we are in life.

At first, I wasn’t excited about that exercise. I am not creative, and I don’t have an eye for photography. But, being the obedient one that I am, I walked around outside looking for something that would encapsulate my life in this season.

And there it was! A lamp post. It looked a little weather-worn, the glass was dusty and slightly cracked, but it was still working and would give off light for our path that night.

I quickly snapped a picture.

As we came back together, we were asked to share about the picture we took. That lamp post gives a snapshot of what I want for my life in the last half of my earthly journey. I know I can’t do the things I did when I was in my 20’s and 30’s. Although I still go overseas twice a year, it’s inevitable that one day, those trips will have to be handed over to someone younger. But not yet.

Just because I’m in the last trimester of life doesn’t mean God is finished with me. I pray I will continue to shine for Him, spreading His light to others in dark times. Yes, my outer being may be a little more wrinkled and worn, and I’m not as spry as I once was, but my light can still shine, just like the lamp post. It wasn’t brand new. The glass wasn’t shiny and clear, but it still gave off light to guide us on the path that night.

I pray my light will shine on this earth until the day He takes me Home.

As Jesus said in Matthew 5:14–16, “You are the light of the world . . . Let your light shine . . .”
